“Every single one of you has something that you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide.”

~President Barack Obama, speech to schoolchildren, 9/8/09

Please, folks, get the facts instead of getting scared.

Reality Check

We all recognize that blue box full of Kraft macaroni and cheese, right?  You know the one.  Most kids in America have probably seen their mom or dad reach for that box when they needed a quick meal.  But we know that not all kids are so lucky.  Kraft has joined Feeding America with the goal of donating 1,000,000 boxes of mac and cheese.  You can help by going here. Each “click” donates another 10 boxes, and you can visit the site every day.  Way to go, Kraft!

I told you that my whole family was visiting this past weekend.  Well, Bea, Mom and I were headed out to do a little shopping on Sunday, and as I was driving my mom suddenly yelled that there was a kitten in the road.  Mind you, I had already driven over it when she realized what it was.  Luckily, no one was around so I stopped and turned around, and thankfully I hadn’t actually run over it – I drove over it.  It was crouched down in the middle of the lane I’d been in, shaking like a little leaf.  Bea jumped out and got it before any other cars came.  There was a farm nearby, so we stopped by to ask if it belonged to them and had just wandered off.  We knew the answer before we even asked though.  Most likely, the kitten (or several of them) were dumped by the side of the road or in a field because someone wanted to get rid of them.

The whole idea of doing something like that is sickening.  If you have pets, you should be responsible enough to have them spayed or neutered.  And if you do end up with a litter of kittens or puppies, is it really that hard to take them to a shelter?  Or put an ad in the paper or on craigslist?  It takes very little effort to do the right thing.

Now Bea’s family seems to have itself a new kitten.  She’s a trooper, I can tell you that.  She survived being abandoned and nearly killed, then she traveled in a car for roughly 6 hours.  She’s none the worse for wear and she is greatly adored already.  And they lived happily ever after.  The End.

I’m sure you’ve been seeing the news coming from Iran.  I feel more fortunate than ever to have the freedoms and rights that come with living in the United States.  I feel like I’m helplessly watching so much injustice.  So I’m praying.  I hope you are too.

Oh, this is not just a picture that made us smile, but also a great idea.  The Obamas wouldn’t be breaking tradition here, they’d be embracing a past tradition.  What better time to replant a White House Victory Garden?  What an amazing model the Obama White House could be in growing food for the White House kitchen and donating fresh, organic produce to local food pantries.  Maybe this will give the rest of us a little nudge to try our not-so-green thumbs at growing some of our own food too.

Check out the complete website at Eat the View and sign the White House Victory Garden petition.  In the meantime, enjoy the video – “This Lawn is Your Lawn.”

“Today we begin in earnest the work of making sure that the world we leave our children is a little bit better than the one we inhabit today.” – President Barack Obama

“Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so. One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return.” ~Mary Jean Iron
