Giving hope

December 11, 2009

I know it’s technically Eco-Friendly Friday, and in a way this goes along with that, but it’s important to me in other ways too.  It’s about humanity.  And compassion.  Kindness.  Respect.  Hope.

A few years ago, Jim and I decided that we wanted to start a new tradition of buying each other a gift that would really help someone else.  That’s where Heifer International comes in.  One year he got a flock of chickens.  Another year some geese.  Every year its something different, depending on what the kids choose.  They really get into the spirit of the whole thing and look forward to browsing through the choices and picking something to help someone else.  Someone they’ll never meet, but someone they know will appreciate and cherish the gift, then pass it on to somebody else.

That’s what I really love about Heifer International.  It’s the whole ripple effect.  The “pay it forward” approach.  When you give a Heifer gift, it doesn’t just help the family who receives it.  Once that gift has begun to prosper and thrive for one family, they in turn pass it on by providing a gift to another family.  Maybe their flock has grown and is helping to feed their family and create an income.  Now they can pass on some chickens to a neighboring family.  The cycle continues from family to family to family.

What better gift can you give than that?

That’s wonderful Michelle. You’re setting a great example for your children. For a while when the kids were younger we used to give them an allowance. For instance they got $5 dollars a week. They saved $2, got to spend $2, and then had to put $1 into the Caring Jar. At the end of the year they got to decide how and who they wanted to donate the money to. We did it for a few year but stopped when they stopped recieving allowances.

I just looked it over some and am going to show the children and talk to them about participating.

That’s awesome, Ingrid. Sam really looks forward to doing it every year. He really wants us to buy the water buffalo, but unfortunately, that isn’t really in the budget. LOL I want the honey bees this year!
