The best party game ever

When I decided to host a birthday party for both my kids on the same day, at the same time, I realized that there needed to be a couple games that both age groups would enjoy playing together.  What we came up with couldn’t possibly have been more fun for the kids to participate in.  Or for us to watch, frankly.  It was seriously hilarious.

You’ve heard of hot potato, right?  I’m not a huge fan of that game because the kids who are eliminated are just left on the sidelines watching the other kids having fun.  This game was a huge improvement.  The basic idea is the same, but even when someone ends up on the sidelines, he’s still having a ball watching the action.  Trust me when I say, the people who aren’t in the game are laughing just as hard as those who are playing.

Here’s the deal.  Before the game begins, fill some small paper plates or pie tins with whipped cream or Cool Whip.  Get the kids to stand in a circle and start playing some fun music.  While the music’s playing, the first “pie” is getting passed around the circle.  When the music stops, whoever is holding it gets a pie in the face.  The catch is that he puts the pie in his own face, to the crazy laughter of his friends.  Then that child steps out of the circle and a new pie gets passed around.

You wouldn’t believe how badly these kids wanted to hit themselves with a pie.  We ended up filling a plate so that every child who wanted to get messy got the chance to.  And since a grown-up is in charge of starting and stopping the music, it’s easy enough to make sure that everyone is left holding that pie sooner or later.

Just be sure to have a hose or a baby pool handy for rinsing off when the game’s over!  Everyone’s gonna get really messy!
